Hypertensive retinopathy is a common sign of chronic atrerial hypertension.

Fundus hypertonicusCommon features of hypertensive retinopathy which can be found in a retinal image are: generalized or localized retinal arteriolar narrowing, arteriovenous crossing changes, cotton wool spots, lame-shaped hemorrhages, arteriolar macroaneurisms, retinal arteriolar sclerosis.

Other features may include: hard exudates in “macular star” configuration, cotton-wool spots, flame-shaped hemorrhages, retinal edema or optic disc edema.
